Florida Water Workshop with Cheryl Holterman

In looking at alternatives to sage burning as a purifier, I came across Florida water. It can cleanse the air and energy, and give you a clean slate before starting a ritual or ceremony. You can carry it with you in a spritzer for on the go purification, or use it as a scent to wear. 

Florida water is a vodka based flower, fruit and herb infusion that sits for a full lunar cycle, and then is strained and used. Mostly based in fresh roses, rosemary, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves and orange peel but you can add whatever other fragrant botanicals you have. 

We'll have a good time getting together near the Full Moon to make a batch of Florida Water that you can take home for your own personal use. Feel free to bring any snacks or drinks!

Yin Yoga is a practice that can have an appearance of looking very slow, passive and cool on the outside…while the internal experience can be very different. As we ask our bodies to explore a posture for anywhere between 2-5 minutes, a myriad of sensations can come to the surface or drift away. A major part of the Yin practice is committing to taking that time to be with what you are feeling, to explore the edges or edginess of the shape you’re in, and to repeatedly soften.

These extended sessions will provide you plenty of time to go into a pose as far as your curiosity can take you.

Restorative Yoga and Deep Listening: A Restorative Yoga Teacher Training with Graciela Mercedes

WHAT: Restorative Yoga and Deep Listening is a weekend long program that draws upon subtle energy awareness and experience to bring each student into a layer of balance. Using asana, pranayama, meditation, visualization, ecology, and art the practitioner/student can construct individual recovery processes that speak directly to their needs. This training will encourage each student to guide and be guided in a restorative fashion. Throughout the weekend students will explore physical and energetic methods; using linguistics and presence to set the tone. Hands-on & hands-off adjustments, sequencing for affects, traditional & modern adaptations, lecture & discussion, and art & nature moments will be called into focus, giving the students a secure, but varied foundation to teach and/or deepen their personal practice.

This training is designed for new and experienced yoga instructors, as well as students who have a sincere interest in deepening their understanding behind the mechanics of restorative yoga. This training also lends itself to health care professionals (nurses/doctors), personal trainers, physical therapists, care-takers, body-workers, and/or counselors/coaches.

*Yoga Alliance approved for 32 hours of continuing education; 20 contact hours, 12 non-contact hours.

WHEN: This training will run from Friday September 28th- Sunday September 30th. There will be plenty of small breaks for snacks and beverages, and a nice lunch break each day. A refrigerator is available for any bag lunches, while there are many cafes and restaurants near by to dine in.

The schedule for each day will be:

Friday September 28th: 9:30am-4:30pm | Saturday September 29th: 11:00am- 6:00pm | Sunday September 30th: 12:00am - 6:00pm

ABOUT: Gracie is a Michigan based yoga instructor who believes in the evolution of the human practice. Her teaching blends together elements from ecology, dance, and ceramics; using an interdisciplinary approach to connect with students and colleagues. Her attention to energetic detail is a defining quality in her work and instruction.

Gracie received her RYT-200 from Marianne Well’s Yoga School in Costa Rica in 2011 and her Restorative Yoga certification from Leeann Carey in 2013. Having the privilege to further her teaching experience through various studios, as well as holding retreats in Mexico, Gracie is an E-RYT 200 and a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP) as recognized by Yoga Alliance.

We will be taking you through yin and restorative postures that open these areas while also providing Thai Bodywork to stimulate and nurture.

Have you ever had a pregnant woman come to your yoga class and you felt unprepared to help her? Are you pregnant yourself and unsure of how to modify your current yoga practice?

In this workshop, yoga teachers will learn to confidently adapt their classes for a pregnant student. Experienced yoga students may also attend to learn how to safely practice throughout their pregnancy.

Cassie will introduce you to the anatomy and physiology of the pregnant body, then outline common concerns and contraindications. You will learn basic hands-on and propped modifications and have the chance to practice applying your newfound skills. Participants will receive a manual for future reference.

The Pregnant Practice is an introduction to prenatal modifications for yoga, not a prenatal yoga teacher training. If you desire to specialize in working with this population, consider Cassie's 95 hour prenatal and postnatal yoga teacher training that begins in January 2017 at Yoga Six!

"The heart is called the 'King' of the organs.  The Internal Medicine Classic states: 'The heart commands all of the organs and viscera, houses the spirit, and controls the emotions.'  In Chinese, the word for 'heart' (hsin) is also used to denote 'mind'.  When the heart is strong and steady, it controls the emotions; when it is weak and wavering, the emotions rebel and prey upon the heart-mind, which then loses its command over the body."

Join Morgan in a deeply nourishing yin yoga practice dedicated to the heart. Yin yoga is a practice of softening, non-grasping, sitting with what is. Due to its passive nature, the practice focuses its attention to the connective tissue and joint spaces of the body. The postures in a yin practice are explored from 2-5 minutes.

The yin yoga postures for the heart are based in the shoulders, arms, hands and upper back.

Join us on a sweet Sunday night for a gong session with Jon Mueller. Jon has played at our studio multiple times and each time has been a noteworthy experience.

Jon Mueller has been a drummer and percussionist for over twenty-five years, performing throughout North America, Europe, United Kingdom, and Japan including the esteemed venues New Museum (NY), The Arnolfini (Bristol, UK), Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, (Montréal, QC) and the Guggenheim Museum (NY).

The aim of Mueller’s solo performance is to engage an audience in listening practice by creating a variety of input both recognizable and not, understood and not, which causes a unique experience in each individual. The session at Saffron Yoga Center will feature over ten gongs of various sizes and types.

In addition to his solo work, he was a founding member of the bands Volcano Choir, Collections of Colonies of Bees, and Pele, and directed the multi-disciplinary project Death Blues, encouraging presence and celebration of each moment. More info at www.rhythmplex.com.

Yoga Nidra with Meg Vetting

Join Meg Vetting of The Heart Revival Wednesday, November 22nd for a Guided Yoga Nidra Meditation practice. The event begins at 7:30pm and ends at 9:00pm. All levels are welcome as this practice is accessible for all students.

Yoga Nidra is an ancient form of meditation. It means yogic sleep or conscious deep sleep. Within meditation, one remains in the waking state of consciousness, and gently focuses the mind, while allowing thought patterns, emotions, sensations and images to arise and go on.

In Nidra, you leave the waking state, go past the dreaming state, and go to deep sleep, yet remain awake. There is a paradox in this: going to sleep, yet still being fully awake seems impossible, yet this is exactly what happens. Relaxation happens at all levels: senses, body, breath, conscious and unconscious mind. The relaxation that comes with alpha and theta levels of the brain can be extremely useful for mental, emotional and physical health.

Students can anticipate some simple and restorative movement before beginning the meditation practice; dress comfortably.

Pain in the neck?!

Shoulders and necks are the victims of our modern life. Spending hours sitting and working at desks, on computers, reading, crafting, etc.

Come learn a little about what's going on in there, and how your yoga practice can help. We'll look at some anatomy, we'll learn yoga poses that can help stretch and strengthen.

We'll then practice together and walk out feeling better, and having the knowledge and tools to work at home to heal and prevent future tweaked necks.
